LUMA Energy reported Tuesday morning that rolling blackouts are impacting parts of Puerto Rico due to generation shortfalls at the Costa Sur power plant.
At 6:25 a.m., approximately 67,233 customers were without power. The hardest-hit areas included Arecibo, Mayagüez, San Juan, and Bayamón. By 8:40 a.m., the number of customers without service had decreased to 19,824.
The Puerto Rico Energy Czar, Engineer Josué Colón Ortíz, reported Wednesday that several critical power generation units remain offline due to technical failures.
The affected units are San Juan #5 steam, Palo Seco #3, and Costa Sur #6, all operated by Genera PR. Additionally, CT#1 and the steam unit operated by EcoEléctrica are out of service due to natural gas supply issues.
These outages have contributed to service interruptions affecting customers since Tuesday and continuing Wednesday.
LUMA Energy said the interruptions are related to insufficient generation capacity, impacting the stability of the electric grid.
“We are in constant communication with the generating companies to minimize the impact on customers,” the company said.
