Cape Coral Man’s Identity Used in G-Wagon Scam

A man from Georgia is facing charges after trying to buy a 2023 Mercedes G-Wagon using a Cape Coral man’s stolen identity.

On June 11, around 6 p.m., Cape Coral Police went to a home after a report of fraud. The victim told police that someone had stolen his identity and tried to use it to buy the expensive SUV.

That day, a notary showed up at the victim’s house with paperwork for the car. As the victim’s wife spoke with the notary, the suspect arrived in an Uber. Police say the man is Ronald B. Hatten, 59, from Atlanta.

The victim confronted Hatten, who tried to run while getting directions over the phone. Officers quickly stopped him.

Hatten admitted he came from Atlanta to do the scam and was promised $500. Police say he also had a warrant in Alabama for a similar crime. During a search, officers found a debit card that did not belong to him.

Hatten was arrested and charged with two counts of criminal use of personal ID. His phone and the debit card were taken as evidence.

The Cape Coral Police Economic Crimes Unit is still working on the case.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Cape Coral Police Department at 239-574-3223.
