Lee County Sheriff Responds to Rumors After Academy Cadet Faints

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) is speaking out after rumors spread about an incident involving a cadet at its Law Enforcement Academy.

On June 16, cadet Douglas McDevitt fainted during training. On-site staff called Lee County EMS. Paramedics checked McDevitt, found him stable, and left the scene.

Following LCSO policy, McDevitt was asked to take a drug test, which is standard any time there is an unusual event involving staff. Instead of taking the test, McDevitt resigned, citing “personal reasons.”

Soon after, rumors began circulating online. Some posts falsely claimed McDevitt suffered a drug overdose. Others claimed there was a criminal investigation that was “called off” by LCSO command.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office firmly denies these claims. In a statement, LCSO said there is no evidence McDevitt was under the influence of drugs or involved in any criminal activity.

“Under no circumstances would anyone call off any investigation into criminal activity,” the statement reads.

The sheriff’s office stressed that its history proves deputies are held accountable. If any employee commits a crime, they are arrested without delay.

LCSO added that it values transparency and due process, reminding the public that everyone is innocent until proven guilty.

The agency called the false rumors harmful and said it remains committed to high hiring standards and public trust.
